Helicopter War: Gunships

Genre: Documentary, Military

The development of air mobile infantry brought with it a need for helicopter gunships to protect the air cavalry. In Helicopter War: Gunships we trace the evolution of the helicopter gunship from the AH-1 Cobra during the Vietnam War to the Apache that was deployed in the First and Second Gulf War. This is the story of the world’s deadliest helicopter gunships and their deployment from Vietnam to Afghanistan.

  1. The Cobra: Beginning of Helicopter Gunships: The AH-1 was America’s first active helicopter gunship born out of the Vietnam War. It is built around a UH-1 Huey transport, out of the Vietnam War. It is built around a UH-1 Huey transport, with the same engine, rotors and tail boom.
  2. The Apache: Next Generation Helicopter Gunships: In service since 1986, the Apache AH-64 was primarily designed as a tank-killer. It can carry 16 laser-guided missiles and hover among trees or behind terrain, popping up to engage targets, then retreat behind cover. In a close-support role, the Apache can bring devastating firepower to bear against a wide range of enemy units.
  3. The Kiowa Warrior: The Kiowa is a dual-role helicopter operated by the US Army. This versatile airframe acts as both a scout helicopter and full-blown attack helicopter. In most cases the Kiowa is deployed along with other assets such as the AH-64 Apache gunship.
  4. BONUS: Russian Terror: The Mi-28 Havoc: The Russian Mi-28 Havoc is the largest helicopter gunship ever built and saw extensive deployment during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.
